HK-H19 - March 10th, 2007

Notes
  • Large maple. Hot heater. 50lbs
  • Previous fire: 10 hours.
  • Grate air open. Ashbox door closed (air open)
  • Repeat of HK-H18, except hot heater vs lukewarm heater, and new HeatKit air vs old HeatKit air.
  • Very interesting test. We are able to accidentally capture a chimney draft reversal at the beginning.
  • In hindsight, the clue is the 35F initial flue temperature reading on the analyzer. Since the heater exits directly to an outside insulated metal chimney at floor level, this condition is quite easy to produce (also quite easy to reverse).

One conclusion from observing these two burns is that the two bottom pieces in this type of log cabin stack
should be smaller. Large bottom pieces are not a good idea.

Opacity

  • Ohm reading: 250 start, 261 finish. Likely 11 ohm drift from deposit on the mirror, or lamp fading.
  • At 24 minutes, reading was 273 ohms, and a very slight amount of blue smoke was visible from chimney exit.
  • At 34 minutes, reading was 265 ohms, and no smoke was visible.
