Summary

Seven winners took trophies home at the fourth annual Masonry Heater Associations contest at Wild-acres Retreat in North Carolina, April 19th, 2011. The contestants were required to design and build their own project alone or with assistance from others in their company. Entrants submitted their best work to be judged by a panel of experts. The experts scored each entry on a point system based on skill in craftsmanship, aesthetics, creative use of materials, and overall design. Obviously the judges did not know who the entrants were. Judging was particularly difficult because all the entries were completed by skilled people and all the work was exceptional.

Jerry Frisch Award

The Jerry Frisch Award this year went to Doug Hargrave of Mid-Atlantic Masonry Heat in Madison, Virginia. The award is named after one of the MHA founders, Jerry Frisch, who has gone above and be-yond helping the Masonry Heater Association of North America and its members. Each year the MHA award committee and current president selects someone who shares Jerry’s commitment to the masonry heater industry.

Previous winners were Tom Trout, Norbert Senf and now Douglas Hargrave. Doug was recognized for his work as treasurer, getting MHA on track with finances, setting up a transparent accounting system and professional reports to the membership.
