Dear Jerry,
The Cold Climate Housing Research Center (CCHRC) is very pleased to be sending our wood combustion specialist David Misiuk PE to your annual meeting this year. As importantly, we are happy to help with travel expenses for Dan Givens, the master craftsman that designed and built the masonry heater in our new Research and Testing Facility in Fairbanks, Alaska. As you may be aware, this heater is being set up with an extensive monitoring protocol and will contribute greatly to understanding the efficiencies and operation of this kind of wood heating appliance.
The contribution that masonry heaters make for heating Alaska's homes is being taken very seriously. The use of wood as a renewable energy source in cold climates like ours is growing exponentially as the price of heating fuels increases, particularly in Northern rural communities. The advantage of site built masonry heaters is obvious for a number of reasons. Among those are its clean and efficient burning characteristics, the potential use of local materials and labor for construction and the high level of inherent safety during combustion. I had the opportunity earlier this year to testify in Washington DC to the Senate Subcommittee on Energy and Natural Resources operation. As part of that testimony wood fired masonry heaters were featured as a viable technology for home heating in cold regions. It is CCHRC's opinion that they certainly are.
I hope that your annual meeting goes well. I look forward to working with your organization to expand our understanding of masonry heaters and promote their use. The importance of an efficient, clean source of heating with renewable energy is important for the nation and the planet. Thanks to all of you at the Masonry Heater Association of America for your efforts.
