How has the MHA helped the industry?

The Association boasts a distinguished history of achievements that have benefited both members and non-members. These accomplishments include:

  • Developing the ASTM Standard Guide for the Construction of Solid Fuel Masonry Heaters, which has helped numerous builders navigate challenges with building inspectors and insurance companies.
  • Successfully advocating to prevent the banning of masonry heaters in Colorado, Washington, and by the Canadian R-2000 program.
  • Creating a comprehensive MHA certification program aimed at reversing Colorado's ban on custom-built heaters. This program is supported by the MHA Heater Mason’s Reference Manual, the definitive guide for heater masons.
  • Collaborating closely with the Hearth Products Association (formerly The Wood Heating Alliance) to coordinate efforts concerning emissions regulations at the international, national, and local levels.
  • Securing funding for and leading EPA-accredited laboratory testing for masonry heaters, achieving EPA equivalency in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Establishing a private MHA-affiliated test lab and developing North America’s largest database on masonry heater performance tests.
  • Gaining an exemption from Minnesota’s stringent makeup air requirements for woodstoves, following a successful MHA research project for the Canadian government.
  • Publishing 'MHA News,' the principal source of masonry heater-related information in North America, celebrated for its long and illustrious history.
